No country for old men (Movie reviews)

It's not a secret that the Coen brothers produce strange movies, unlike the others,'not for everyone', bringing their own vision of the world and their taste. Some people understand them, others-don't. One thing is clear: the are as simple as brilliant at the same time. No extravagance, only the essence, but in their brand-new cover.

This screen-version fits perfectly the book by Cormac McCarthy, a real master of his genre, who has a special style and syntax, and whose psychology can be compared with Dostoevsky's. In the movie I would outline two major themes:

1) The old men: It's especially hard foe elderly people to accept innovations. Time often reconciles, settles differences, heals wounds, but it cannot change minds, because the values are hard and steady.

Here they show a particular country where there's no place for them: they are forgotten, thrown out and left outside the history. Nothing seems to be surprising: they've seen too much blood, pain and fear in their lives, but every new generation knows how to amaze. No matter whether it's cruelty, cynicism, their attitude to the folks, drugs, guns, freaks and so on, and so forth... That's why they feel useless, withdrawn from the society which had already been corrupted, with no moral, no religion, no truth, no soul in it.

Human nature dies, leaving onle chaos, void behind. They cannot be filled. The old men fear for their country which falls into decay, for the young people who don't care. There must be a conflict of generations, but it does not exist. Everyone is trying to disclaim responsibility.

I can call Ed Tom Bell (with his archaeic reflections), Carson Wells, even Llewelyn Moss 'old men'. The latter has never seen such a huge sum of money, yielded to every temptation and took it. He started to do the wrong things, he did not understand that he had to deal with a merciless killer, did't know where to stop.

But how acute the problem is! Has anything changed nowadays? This is the value of the original and of the adaptation.

2) About Justice and Death
Anton Chigurh represents these two notions. He is a merciless, insane maniac, a psychopath. He has a special sign (marker), but the actions he performs are not close to perfection, are not new... He thinks that he is the Сhastener and has the right to murder.

I'd like to draw your attention to Javier Bardem whom I adore. The Coens would have lost without him. Bardem is able to show everything (one of the smartest actors in the world). He managed to create the brightest image, impossible to forget.

Death is everywhere: in all shocking scenes,in the stillness of nature, in the dialogues, in the absence of music.
A hard, provocative art-house thriller and a good screen- version.
